Macy's is to pay $650,000 (￡390,000) to settle claims it racially profiled and detained ethnic minority shoppers at its flagship Manhattan shop. Under a deal with New York's attorney-general Macy's agreed to a series of changes at its 42 stores across the state. Staff at Macy's, one of US retailing's big names, were said to have targeted shoppers because of their colour. US actor Rob Brown was among customers suspected of theft or fraud. Some complaints against Macy's were from customers who, despite not concealing goods, were detained after moving between floors at the Manhattan store. Russia's main consumer watchdog has temporarily shut four McDonald's restaurants in Moscow as part of an investigation into food standards. Watchdog Rospotrebnadzor claimed the restaurants had breached "numerous" sanitary laws. McDonald's said it was looking at the complaints, adding its "top priority is to provide safe and quality products". The closures come amid rising tensions between Russia and the West over the crisis in the Ukraine. Amazon has stepped up its presence in China with a strategic partnership with the Shanghai Free Trade Zone (FTZ). Amazon's branch in China has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Shanghai FTZ and Shanghai Information Investment Limited (SII). The deal paves the way for Amazon to bring millions of its e-commerce product offerings from around the world directly to Chinese customers. It comes as Amazon celebrates 10 years of operations in China. (Reuters) - French business activity was stagnant in August, a survey showed on Thursday, as an improvement in the services sector could not fully offset the worst performance in over a year in manufacturing in the euro zone's second-biggest economy. JOHANNESBURG— The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is putting off thousands of tourists who had planned trips to Africa this year, especially Asians, including to destinations thousands of miles from the nearest infected community such as Kenya and South Africa. Ebola, a hemorrhagic disease which can kill up to 90 percent of those it infects, has claimed more than 1,300 lives this year in the three small West African states of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and also has a toehold in Nigeria.
